Photo Club Update For June

June 20, Noon — MAAG Photo Walk in the Wissahickon.

A few words from Nicki Toizer…

-Morning sunrise over North Philly seen from the Chestnut Hill West RRSheppardWilliams

(c) Shepherd Williams

The Photo Club at the Mt. Airy Art Garage continues to build up steam as more people join and contribute to this growing community. At the core, we are a group of people that enjoy photography. Some members have many years of experience, others are just discovering this art form. Several in our group have recently had their work on display; you may still be able to see work by Van Williams at Mt. Airy Read & Eat and Nathalie Borozny at the Philadelphia Sketch Club

Our monthly meetings (3rd Saturday, noon-2 pm) are an opportunity to get to know each other, discuss photography, and share our images. As long as the weather holds out, we’ll be doing something different on June 20. Meet us at Harper’s Meadow in the Wissahickon (near Northwestern Ave & Forbidden Drive, across Germantown Avenue from Chestnut Hill College) for a picnic and group photo walk. Bring your lunch, camera, and a tripod or monopod, if you have one. We’ll eat first and then explore the area with our cameras. Experienced photographers will be happy to help novices so don’t be afraid to ask questions!  If it’s raining, we’ll meet at the Garage. You can double-check our plans at 10 am that same morning by contacting nicki.maag@gmail.com. If we’re indoors, bring a recent photo or two to share with the group and be prepared to answer this question: What were you thinking about when you took the picture?

Regardless of where we meet, there is a $5/person fee.

Call for entries at the Philadelphia Sketch Club for their annual PHOTOgraphy Exhibition. Deadline is Monday, July 6 at midnight. Find out more HERE.

Meadow Maple by Judy Levy

A little about Nicki: Glenside photographer, Nicki Toizer, grew up in the West Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia. Over the past 20+ years, she has captured trees, flowers, wildlife, and almost anything else found outside with her cameras. “I prefer to take pictures outdoors, to highlight the beauty in nature all around us. In this era of international distrust, it seems more important than ever to be reminded that peace and beauty are not so far away after all.”

Fall Classes @ MAAG! Treat Yourself!

New York Beauty Quilt Technique Class | Sarah Bond

2 Sessions — Saturdays, October 25 & November 22, 2014

2 pm — 6 pm

Class fee $65

bond157_010ProvenceBeautyThis is a workshop style class designed for advanced beginners and beyond. This is a great technique for creating those perfect points every time. We’ll start the class with a basic, simple New York Beauty block and we’ll walk you through the basics of paper piecing. We’ll continue on to variations including flying geese, multiple sets of points and triangles, and long points with narrow outlines. You can try all the variations or just stick with the ones you like. We’ll provide new pattern sets at each class. During the last class, we’ll experiment with placement of the blocks so you can see how the different sets and arrangements of the blocks can create the contemporary or traditional quilt that is perfect for you.

It is not necessary to have all your fabric for the first class. You can add in fabrics as you go as the colors and textures start to develop together in your quilt.

Drawing Workshop | Robert Finch

2 Sessions — Sunday, October 26 & Sunday, November 2

2 pm – 5 pm

Class Fee $60

drawing by Robert FinchWe will learn to draw using multiple mediums, i.e. pencil, charcoal, crayon and pastels. Any medium can be used to express just how you feel. There are no rules to drawing and no right or wrong way, only your way. The purpose of this workshop is for you to become familiar with the traditions of good drawing. We believe that anyone can draw, with one major proviso— you have to really want to. You can learn when you let go of your inhibitions. There is no end to the possibilities. This workshop will consist of both still life setups and posing the human figure. The medium is open, however, we believe the student should choose one that they are most comfortable with. Students 16 and older are welcome. Open to all levels.

Robert Finch, a modern day master of the art of drawing, will act as the catalyst in your personal journey of discovery. Drawings by Robert Finch are in many public and private collections, including the Potsdam Museum in New York, and, in Philadelphia, the Free Library and the Pennsylvania Law School.
