Open Call for Artists: A Sense of Burning

Mt. Airy Art Garage, in partnership with The Philadelphia Theatre Company at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, is having an Open Call for Artists

October 18 – November 10, 2019

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) is holding an open call for artists to submit for “A Sense of Burning”, happening from October 18 – November 10, 2019 at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre at 480 S. Broad St, Philadelphia, PA, 19146.

A Sense of Burning will be the first of three exhibits MAAG will mount at The Philadelphia Theatre Company this year, in conjunction with their production of A Small Fire. We encourage all artists to ask themselves: What burns in you or haunts you? Is it passion, pain, anger, joy, determination, loss? Is it a tingle or a searing, undeniable quest to continue to live fully while overcoming limitations? Our senses rule much of our lives and drive us to make decisions. How we respond to our senses guides our reactions. How we express our longings and our need to be understood in the world. We encourage artists to submit up to two (2) pieces of work to be on display and for sale in this upcoming exhibit. 

Adam Bock’s meticulously crafted A Small Fire follows Emily Bridges, a woman used to running all the things – from her construction business to her family – until she suddenly and mysteriously starts losing her physical senses. As her world changes, her relationships shift in poignant and revelatory ways.

An Arts Festival in Mt. Airy to celebrate our 10th Anniversary, our new home, and neighbors!

Saturday, September 14, 2019 11 AM – 5 PM

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) is holding an open call for artists to submit to “MAAG Rocks Art!”, a one-day Arts Festival in Mt. Airy on Germantown Avenue between Mt. Pleasant and Sedgwick Avenues on Saturday, September 14, 2019 (rain date: Sunday, September 15).

MAAG will be continuing our 10th Anniversary with a celebration of our new building. This is an opportunity for the diverse community of creative emerging and seasoned artists to exhibit and sell their work in downtown Mt. Airy. All artistic mediums will be considered! This event will be free to the public and feature food vendors, live music, and tours of our new space. Artists will get 10’ x 10’ spaces to display their work.

Artists are encouraged to submit their work for this opportunity! Booths will be $40 for MAAG members and $50 for non-members, which includes a $10 non-refundable Jurying Fee. Please note there will be no electricity provided for this event and artists may not sell, or give away, any food items.

All artists are encouraged to promote their work in this show and postcards will be available for distribution.

This is the Second Annual Philly Family Pride event in Mt. Airy that celebrates the diverse, beautiful, and extraordinary LGBTQ families and artists here in Philadelphia.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall, the Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs, Philadelphia Family Pride, and the Mt. Airy Art Garage have partnered again for the second Philly Family Pride Picnic & Arts Festival. This event will be held at Lovett Library Park located at 6945 Germantown Avenue on Saturday June 22 with a rain date of Sunday, June 23, 2019. The event runs from 11 am–5 pm. Admission will be free and open to all ages, families, and community members.

This event will have family-specific entertainment, fine art and handcraft, music, food, and resource tables from a variety of organizations and nonprofits that provide services and support to LGBTQ families and youth.

Open Call For Artists – Makers and Lovers

The Philadelphia Theatre Company, at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, in partnership with the Mt. Airy Art Garage Gallery, is now accepting applications to exhibit your work.

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) is holding an open call for artists to submit images for “Makers and Lovers;” a gallery opportunity happening this coming March at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre (480 S. Broad Street). We encourage artists to submit up to two pieces of work to be on display and for sale in this upcoming exhibit. In honor of Women’s History Month, some of the themes we are looking for are race, feminism, diversity, sexuality, and a look at being black and queer and female in America.

Makers and Lovers is the final of three exhibits MAAG will mount at The Philadelphia Theatre Company. The conclusion of the season will feature the world premiere of How to Catch Creation, an inspirational story running March 22 – April 14, 2019. In the mid-1960s, a black, queer, feminist writer’s life is changed when her girlfriend tells her some unexpected news. Fifty years later, the reverberations of that moment still echo in the lives of four individuals in the rapidly changing city of San Francisco. Christina Anderson’s stunning and complex examination of the universal act of creation—creation of life, of family, of art—spans space and time to inspire a new generation of makers and lovers. So it only makes sense that our final MAAG exhibition for the season is Makers and Lovers.

Open Call For Photographers – The Road Not Taken

The Philadelphia Theatre Company, at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, in partnership with the Mt. Airy Art Garage Gallery, is now accepting applications to exhibit your work.

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) is holding an open call for photographers to submit images for “The Road Not Taken;” a gallery opportunity happening this coming February at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre (480 S. Broad Street). We encourage photographers to submit up to two pieces of work to be on display and for sale in this upcoming exhibit. Some of the themes we are looking for are bridges, landscape, exciting images of the art of photography, loving, longing, loneliness and the barrenness of landscapes. Search through your work for unique images that mean The Road Not Taken to you. Have fun exploring these ideas.

The Road Not Taken is the second of three exhibits MAAG will mount at The Philadelphia Theatre Company. The Road Not Taken will accompany the production of The Bridges of Madison County, which will run from February 8 – March 3, 2019. In this soaring romance, Francesca Johnson, a beautiful Italian woman who married an American soldier to flee war-ravaged Italy, looks forward to a rare four days alone on her Iowa farm in 1965. However, her quiet escape is upended when ruggedly handsome National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid pulls into her driveway seeking directions. What happens next in those four days may very well alter the course of Francesca’s life.

Call for Artists – 10th Anniversary Holiday Art Market

December 8-9, 2018

In partnership with Mt. Airy Custom Furniture – 7054 Germantown Avenue

Deadline for Submissions: Tuesday, November 20

It’s getting close to the Holiday Art Market – A Juried Holiday Display of Original Fine Art and Handcrafts. This is our 10th Anniversary year and we intend to celebrate with fine art, handcraft, live music, food, and a wonderful time for all. Submissions will be juried. We will notify you if your work has been accepted no later than Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

All artists are invited to submit their work for sale at our Holiday Art Market on Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9, Noon – 6 pm, with setup on Friday, December 7, 6 to 9 pm. All work must be your own original work. Anything you submit must reflect what has been juried (no add-ons). The cost for the weekend (space up to 10’ x 10’) is $100/members and $150/non-members for two days. All current members will have first priority in the jurying process. The artists retain 100% of their sales when selling during the Art Market. Non-members will receive a free MAAG membership.

Open Call For Artists – America Undone

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) is holding an open call for artists to submit for “America Undone;” two separate gallery opportunities happening this October at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre (480 S. Broad Street) and the MAAG Gallery (6622 Germantown Avenue). We encourage artists to submit up to two pieces of work to be on display and for sale in these upcoming shows.

America Undone will be the first of three exhibits MAAG will mount at The Philadelphia Theatre Company this year. America Undone will accompany the production of Sweat, which will run October 12 – November 4, 2018. Sweat tells the story of a group of friends who have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets, and laughs while working together on a factory floor in Reading, PA. However, when layoffs and picket lines begin to chip away at their trust, the friends find themselves pitted against each other in a heart-wrenching fight to stay afloat. “One of the hardest jobs anyone can have is the job of being poor,” said Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage. “To survive from day to day is an epic struggle to find a way to feed yourself, clothe yourself, put a roof over your head. It is the most Herculean path when you have nothing.”

We encourage artists of all disciplines to submit a work to be on display and for sale in this upcoming show, “Divided Nation.” The exhibit will reflect on our current political and social climate: from voting rights, free press/freedom of speech, racial discrimination, immigration issues, equality, safety for women and all residents of the U.S.
