Hey all you MAAG member artists. Have you noticed all the commotion going on around our new location? There’s new housing going up, new businesses opening, Holistic Health Fairs, and a whole new attitude. 

So we’re trying something new — a way to get more connected with our local community. We’re going to start up some summertime strolling, buying, eating, and all around appreciating the “South Side” of Mt. Airy! Little Jimmie’s and Malelani are going forces with us to make this an exciting kickoff. High Point is excited too. In fact, all the local businesses are “in,” and we are ready to turn out some art and bring it into the street. The event will be short, fun, and we think a sign of more robust “happenings” to come in the future. So join us, and get in on the ground floor. It’s a new experiment, one we think you’ll want to be part of, with very reasonable member-only exhibition fees.

MAAG will host an outdoor and indoor exhibition during Jazz ON THE Sidewalk, and we invite MAAG members to participate in a Clothesline Outdoor Fine Art and Handcraft Show. Download your application here.

We offer two ways to participate: 

1. Hang your art work on the MAAG wall. Each artist may submit one piece of art no larger than 4’ x 4’. MAAG will take no commission on work sold, so all artists must be present 3 – 6 pm on June 17. Entry fee is $10. 

2. Set up your own table in a maximum space of 4’ x 4’. Each artist/crafter must bring their own table, chairs, supports, etc. MAAG will take no commission on work sold, and participants must remain with their work during the event. Entry fee is $15.

Open Call For Artists — “Having Our Say” Exhibition with Philadelphia Theatre Company

Deadline for submission: Jan. 16, 2017

We are pleased to announce our partnership with Philadelphia Theatre Company during the run of the play “Having Our Say” — a play adapted from the book written by the Delany sisters, African American women who were both civil rights activists and groundbreakers in the fight for equality in this country. Their sharp memories show us the post-Reconstruction South and Booker T. Washington, Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Paul Robeson. Bessie breaks barriers to become a dentist; Sadie quietly integrates the New York City system as a high school teacher. Their extraordinary story makes an important contribution to our nation’s heritage—and an indelible impression on our lives.

We are honored to be curating a special exhibition that will highlight our struggles to overcome barriers. We are soliciting artwork that speaks to struggle, pride in your culture or other cultures, and speaks to people overcoming barriers. All submissions will be juried. Each artist may submit no more than two pieces ($15 per submission), with a total space, per artist, up to 4’ x 4’. No work requiring pedestals can be accepted.

The exhibition will run January 27th to February 19th, with a Community Open House and Exhibition Opening on Saturday, February 4th from 4pm to 8pm.

TWO weekends, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3/4 (deadline Nov. 28) and Dec. 17/18 (deadline Dec. 12) from Noon till 6 pm. #MAAGPopsUp at our newest spot at 7301 Germantown Ave., Lutheran Theological Seminary Hagan Center Gym).

It’s our 8th Annual Holiday Market — an even larger location than ever before! We’ve been spreading the word in other publications, online, and on the street! Local fine art and handcraft, your original artwork, will be amidst a celebration for the holidays that neighbors love to attend. We’ve got singer songwriters in the mix, music, food to taste, goodies to sip…it’s a community of holiday fun!

So don’t miss this opportunity to reach an even larger audience. This year, we launch a special student rate (with proof of ID) to give young, emerging artists a venue. Sharing a table with another artist is OK too! Deadlines are fast approaching, and we’d love to have you in the mix.

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) will again be a key destination point during Philadelphia Open Studios Tour (POST). As #MAAGPopsUp, we will be hosting you in a location larger than ever before, thanks to our friends at Lutheran Theological Seminary. 

We are welcoming both member and nonmember artists. This is your opportunity to show your work within a well-publicized, citywide arena. Our new pop up location, featuring up to 30 artists, will be among the largest concentration of visual artists under one roof.

All submissions will be considered including: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, collage, found objects, handcrafts, textile, mosaic, furniture, etc.  Space up to 10’ x 10’ will be made available to each applicant. Entry fee for both days is $100 for members/$150 for nonmembers (includes MAAG membership).

Now that we are moving, come share your artwork once again. Our community/ family has been working, building, dreaming and creating together for seven years. As we plan the new era, let’s pause and celebrate where we are today!

This is a non-juried MAAG members-only exhibition with all mediums and large-size pieces accepted. You may submit up to 4 pieces depending on size. No work may be larger than 6’ x 6’. All work must be for sale. The fee for participating in this exhibition is $10 for each submission.

This summer, the focus is on Philadelphia as the city hosts the Democratic National Convention. The theme of the convention is “Let’s Make History Again.” In 2008, over 131 million Americans voted, the most ever for a presidential election, and the highest rate in 40 years. Can this be surpassed in 2016? 

The City’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy has invited the Mt. Airy Art Garage (and other nonprofit arts organizations) to participate in VOTE, a nonpartisan exhibit highlighting cultural organizations from different neighborhoods to create works that encourage voting. City Hall is expecting a flood of visitors from all over the country. This is an opportunity for MAAG member artists to weigh in on why voting in this year’s election is so critical. Not a member yet? This could be a good time to join. 

The Mt. Airy Art Garage will curate a display case where we are asking you to create a work(s) of art that includes the word “VOTE” or speaks why voting is critical to you. The works can be photographic, sculptural, found object mixed media, graphic signage, installation, etc. Your work cannot be supportive or be critical of a specific candidate or party. The content can focus on issues, the arts and/or on voting.

It’s getting close to the Holiday Art Market at MAAG. And if you know MAAG, you know we can really host quite a bash. This is our 6th Annual and we intend to celebrate with fine art, handcraft, live music, food, and a wonderful time for all. 

All artists are invited to submit your work for sale at our Holiday Shows. There will be two separate shows. The Dec. 5/6 show is still accepting applications. The Dec. 19/20 show is full. All work must be your own original work. Anything you submit must reflect what has been juried (no add-ons). Download your application here.

The cost for each weekend table is $100/members and$115/nonmembers for two days.  We are also offering wall space in the gallery (members only). Not a member yet? Now could be a great time to join!

Special for MAAG members only! Now is the time to display a wall in the Solomon Levy Gallery at MAAG. We are offering ½ walls to show and promote your work. Any member artists displaying their work on the walls may also participate at the December 5/6 Art Market at no additional charge. The artists retain 100% of their sales when selling during the Art Markets.
