2024 Black Art Matters

Celebrating Black History Month

January 14 – February 16, 2024

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) invites all artists to submit their art for the 2024 Black Art Matters exhibition happening January 14 – February 16, 2024, in the Gallery at MAAG, 7054 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19119. This annual exhibition celebrates Black History Month and showcases Philadelphia’s cultural experience as has been shaped by the struggles, triumphs, strengths, and success of its dynamic African American community.

Artists may submit up to two (2) pieces of artwork to be on display and for sale. All mediums are welcome for consideration. All 2-D work must be framed with wire hangers. Artists submitting sculpture or other 3-D work may need to provide their own pedestals.

Submission Guidelines

MAAG welcomes all artists, from emerging to professional. We also strive for excellence and professionalism in presenting artwork; therefore, all work must be professionally presented and properly finished.

  • All works of art must reflect the theme of the show and be the work that was submitted to the jury.
  • All works of art must be original, done by the artist, and ready to properly present. All 2-D art must be framed with wire hangers.
  • Artists submitting 3-D art may need to provide their own pedestals.
  • Each artist can submit up to 2 pieces of art, not to exceed 4 ft. x 4 ft.
  • It is recommended that the artist be present at art receptions.
  • All work must be for sale. The commission on work sold during the event is 35%.
  • MAAG does have insurance on exhibited works, which covers the costs of the materials only. All work is insured only for the duration of the show. Any pieces not picked up after the due dates are not insured.

  • MAAG’s Submission Form (download here)
  • Up to 2 JPG images (300 dpi) of your work. Be advised that submitted images may be used by MAAG for advertising and marketing if the work is accepted.
  • Entry Fee per piece submitted: $20/MAAG members, $25/non-members, which can be sent via PayPal, snail mail or hand delivered.
  • Artist Statement/Bio describing the work submitted and a paragraph about the artist.

Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: Sunday, December 17, 11:59 PM
  • Notice of Acceptance sent on or near Friday, December 22, 2023
  • Artwork Delivery Dates: January 5-7, 2024 (Fri-Sat: noon-6 PM, Sun: noon-5 PM)
  • Opening Reception: Friday, January 19, 2024, 5-7 PM
  • Artist Pick-Up: February 17-18 (Sat: noon-6 PM, Sun: noon-5 PM)

MAAG assumes no liability for any damage that may occur during the exhibit and is not responsible for any artwork left past the pickup date.
