Black Art Matters 2025

January 29 – February 28

The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG) invites all artists to submit their art for the exhibition, Black Art Matters 2025, happening January 29-February 28, 2025, in MAAG’s Gallery at 7054 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19119.

In honor of Martin Luther King,Jr’s birthday celebration and Black History Month, we will showcase the arts and history of African Americans as we begin 2025. This annual exhibition celebrates Black History Month and showcases Philadelphia’s cultural experience as has been shaped by the struggles, triumphs, strengths and successes of its dynamic African American community.

Artists may submit up to two (2) pieces of artwork to be on display and for sale. All mediums are welcome for consideration. All 2-D work must be framed with wire hangers. Artists submitting sculpture or other 3-D work may need to provide their own pedestals.

Submission Guidelines

MAAG welcomes all artists, from emerging to professional. We also strive for excellence and professionalism in presenting artwork; therefore, all work must be professionally presented and properly finished.

  • All works of art must reflect the theme of the show and be the work that was submitted to the jury.
  • All works of art must be original, done by the artist, and ready to properly present — framed with wire hangers.
  • Artists wishing to submit art that exceeds 4 ft. wide or 4 ft. high will need to contact MAAG at info@mtairyartgarage.org.
  • All work must be for sale. All sales are processed by the MAAG Gift Shop, and the commission on work sold during the show is 35%. Sold artwork must remain in the gallery till closing date.
  • It is recommended that artists be present at the art reception.
  • MAAG does have insurance on exhibited works, which covers the costs of the materials only. All work is insured only for the duration of the show. Any pieces not picked up after the due dates are not insured.

  • MAAG’s Submission Form (download here)
  • Up to 2 JPG images (300 dpi) of your work. Be advised that submitted images may be used by MAAG for advertising and marketing if the work is accepted.
  • Entry Fee per piece submitted: $20/MAAG members, $25/non-members, which can be sent via PayPal, snail mail or hand delivered.
  • Artist Statement/Bio describing the work submitted and a paragraph about the artist.

Important Dates

  • Application Deadline: Thursday, January 16, 11:59 PM
  • Notice of Acceptance sent on or near Friday, January 17
  • Artwork Delivery Dates: January 24-26 (Fri-Sat: noon-6 PM, Sun: noon-5 PM)
  • Opening Reception: Friday, January 31, 5-7 PM
  • Artist Pick-Up: March 1-2 (Sat: noon-6 PM, Sun: noon-5 PM)

MAAG assumes no liability for any damage that may occur during the exhibit and is not responsible for any artwork left past the pickup date.
