“Philly Sidewalk”

Elfie Harris grew up in the Germantown area of Philadelphia spending much of her free time in Fairmount Park and her summers on the Great Lakes, Martha’s Vineyard or studying ceramics with Rudi Staffel at Temple University. She continued with the study of sculpture at the California College of the Arts and Brandeis University and received her MFA in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania. She sculpts in marble and clay, mostly abstract forms that recall the human in indefinable ways, and she also indulges in photography.

In the middle of her formal studies she spent a year in Tuscany studying Bronze casting on a Watson Foundation Fellowship. While in Italy, she met her future husband, fellow artist Gianni Benvenuti; and the two of them lived in Germantown during and after her graduate studies.

Elfie has shown extensively in the United States. In addition to being passionately dedicated to her own art, she is also dedicated to the visual arts community. She is one of the founders of the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours and, she is currently restructuring her house and studio space to accommodate several more artist studios. She is a member of the Northwest Artist Collective and the Mount Airy Art Garage.
